BETTER UP THERE
PORTRAIT OF LEO SLEMETT.
THE STORY OF A PARTICULAR EXISTENCE.
45 MINUTE FILM
SYNOPSIS
A 45-minute portrait film, Better up there is the story of a particular, moving existence, that of Léo Slemett.
Throughout his rise in the world of freeride skiing, Léo leads a relentless fight against adversity to pursue his dreams and push his limits.
Against the magnificent backdrop of the high mountains and the Freeride World Tour, we see Léo face incredible challenges and setbacks.
We observe how the loss of his two life partners shapes Leo's, how he learns to live with this pain and continues to move forward.
Imposed by a mountain that gives and takes everything from him, the paradox of fullness and sadness drives the story and questions us:
Isn't Leo's world like each of our lives?
ABOUT Léo
In 2013, at the age of 19, Léo became the youngest skier in history to obtain a place on the Freeride World Tour (FWT), one of the first also to build his career methodically, to win.
That same year, he was diagnosed with Crohn's disease, a chronic inflammatory disease of the digestive system. Despite this heavy constraint, he continued to excel in his sport.
In 2016, his partner Estelle Ballet, a freeride snowboard champion, lost her life in an avalanche in Switzerland. Deeply affected by the tragedy, Léo nevertheless pushes his limits in freeride skiing.
In 2017, he won the FWT. Crowned world champion, Léo will lead a dual career as a competitor and high mountain skier, nourishing his dreams of expeditions and summits in the Himalayas, in the Caucasus and on his Chamonix slopes.
His boundless commitment adds physical wounds to the moral ones that overwhelm him. But the meeting with Adèle Milloz, ski mountaineering champion and aspiring guide, takes Léo towards a happier tomorrow.
Their relationship, which quickly became close, was interrupted when, in August 2022, Adèle and her client were victims of a fatal climbing accident.
Devastated again, Léo tries to rebuild himself through his passion for the mountains.

In the world of Léo Slemett, there are highs: freeriding and love.
And downs: illness, death, collapse. And a question: How to find hope or joy in the midst of misfortune?
FILM 45 MIN
Faced with this relentless succession of Up and Down, the film explores the facts and emotions that intersect on the same backdrop: the mountain, the skiing, the passion, all pushed to their paroxysm. The film can thus install the paradox of a mountain that invites the greatest self-fulfillment, as well as the permanent questioning of existence itself.
The choice of a natural chronology respects the story as it is delivered by Léo's voice, from a single interview of sometimes overwhelming sincerity. This raw and restrained voice is joined by those of many close friends. The voices intertwine, with realism, modesty, accuracy...
But other actors in their own right give a second dimension to the film: skiing and the mountain unfold their striking images and everywhere a powerful light returns to flood the darkest moments. Like the skier on the slope, the spectator perceives the vertigo of the most total commitment and the uncertainty that accompanies it.
